Electric Fence

An electric fence is a barrier that uses electric shocks to deter animals from crossing a boundary.

An electric fence system consists of a device called a power energizer, a length of bare wire and a rod used to lead the electricity into the ground. Any other enclosure involved, such as a chain link fence or razor wire barrier, would be more accurately described as an electrified fence. The power energizer may draw its power from a standard 110v or 220v outlet, but the actual amperage is often commuted down considerably. Every second or so, a pulse of high electrical energy is sent down the wire from the energizer to the grounding rod.

A pulse of electric current is sent along the fence wire, about one pulse per second, from an energizer, also known as fence charger or fencer which is grounded. When an animal touches the fence, it completes the circuit between the fence and the ground receiving a short, sharp but safe shock. ​​​

Because the fence is a psychological barrier, it does not require great physical strength. However, it is well designed and constructed to absorb some pressure from animals, snow and wind.

The need for Electric Fencing

The electric security fence will add extra security to your home. Security fencing can guard against the rising occurrence of thefts being witnessed across Nigeria. The erecting electric fences will help you to ward off intruders that no one will be able to vandalize or tamper with homes where electric fences are installed. It is a double threat in that an intruder would have to scale the wall, and would also receive an instant electric shock at the same time. Security electric fences are best for lone homes that are not in close proximity to other homes. Despite these obvious advantages, electric fences have their shortcomings. They may not be in neighborhoods because there is always a chance of causing harm to those who are close to an electric fence home. “Electric fences can also protect families against other sources of harm. Burglars are not the only potential intruders that may want to enter your home. An electric fence will also protect your home and family against anyone who would want to inflict harm on your family. Some electric fences are also used to keep wild animals from entering your property. This is usually used with homes that are located close to bushes. In electric fencing system, signs are placed around the building to warn people to avoid the fence. Those who fail to adhere to these instructions face the risk of being electrocuted.

How electric fence works

An electric fence energizer converts mains or battery power into a high voltage pulse. The energizer releases this pulse on to an insulated fence line about once every second. The pulse itself is only around 150 microseconds long.

This pulse is commonly referred to as the "shock" and is felt by any animal or an intruder which touches an electrified fence. When he makes contact with the fence the circuit is complete. It is at this point he receives a shock. The current then flows through the earth back to the ground system and completes the circuit.

An electric fence is a psychological barrier rather than a physical one so the animal must be educated to respect the fence. The pain that an animal feels is short lived and does not physically harm the animal, unlike barbed wire which can cause severe cuts and long lasting pain whilst also damaging the hide.
